Monday, February 8, 2010 . Introduction (Part 2)

Hi all,

So let us continue the journey of my (boring) life. My Co-Curriculum Activity(CCA) is the choir, where "people who are passionate about singing come together and bring endless entertainment to the public"(quoted from the choir brochure which is given to all freshmen on their orientation day). There are 5 sections in the choir: base, barritone, tenor, alto and soprano. I am currently in tenor, so I still sound like a baby, and I greatly envy my friends who have gone through puberty and became sopranoes. However, one of my choir teachers once remaked that those who have yet to reach puberty sing like angels( I wonder if I get wings too).

The choir is rather slack, and we only have one practice session a week. This is true until 6 to 7 months before a competition (e.g. Singapore Youth Festival, World Choir Games) or singing events (e.g. School Aniversary) when our nightmare begins. Despite the ever-increasing homework we have to complete before the deadlines, it is compulsary to attend the choir practices 3 times a week, 6 hours a practice. Therefore, it is a common sight to see choir members rushing through pieces of worksheets or furiously typing on their laptops when their section is not being trained. This is actually good because we can copy- I mean help each other with questions, ask our seniors if we truly do not know and a fun time learning with our peers.

Our upcoming event is a Community Involvement Project (CIP) in Vietnam where we teach orphans to sing. We are currently learning 7 songs (see attached videos) and improving our piano skills. Let's just hope that we can make a difference in their lives.

Here are two of the songs that we are singing:

1. Can You Feel The Love Tonight by Elton John

2. Workin' on the Railroad

Hope you enjoy them!

Sunday, February 7, 2010 . Tooting My (Very Small) Horn

Hi all,

As this my first post for this blog, I would like to introduce myself and toot my horn. But first of all, let me lay down my blog policies and officially swear:

1. To never give away personal particulars, because this is not a private blog. Personal particulars include one’s name, birthday, address, pictures etc. So I will only be known as Chief Justice, CJ, the Loanshark and Class Treasurer(by now you should know that I am just a student).

2. All views expressed in this blog are mine and mine alone unless otherwise stated.

3. Respect my school's confidentiality and proprietary information and not discuss it.

4. Be respectful to my peers and elders.

5. Maintain the politeness and authenticity of the comments on my blog postings, deleting comments if necessary.

Yeah, I'm finally done with the administrative matters. Now on to a more personal side of my life.

Some people may have been asking by now why I have chosen "Schooled 4(for) Life" as my blog title. Isn't school boring? Isn't school a place for monsters from the depths of Hell to come up and scare us till we wet our pants? A place where mountains of homework are thrown into our worn-out and sleep-deprived faces? Or is it that I am plain retarded/ lazy and thus keep repeating school for life? Actually, I strongly believe in the chinese idiom “百年树人”, which means to improve oneself intellectually throughout one's life. Some of you might be laughing your heads off, wondering if I'm a nutcase. Besides, who likes to study? I do not LOVE to study, but I do find joy at learning something new, especially if it takes me a long time and much effort to learn it. Remember when you first learned to walk(ok, maybe you were too young to remember), or the time you finally manage to defeat some villain in some computer game? Or the time you successfully stole a cookie from the cookie jar without your mother finding out? We are always learning new things everyday.
So keep learning guys(seriously, we have about 3 tests next week).

Cheers,
Chief Justice
